Chicago dermatologist is qualified to diagnose and treat different types of skin cancer
Nationwide, around a million Americans each year are diagnosed with some form of skin cancer. There are several different types and many factors play a role in development of skin cancer. Dr. Jonith Breadon of Aesthetic Dermatology and Laser Surgery encourages Chicago area residents to be aware of potential skin cancer. Any questionable moles or skin concerns should be addressed promptly with the dermatologist. Regular skin checks are advisable to be sure that developing conditions are not overlooked. A trained eye will be more effective at recognizing harmful growths or discolorations visible on the skin’s surface. Early detection of skin cancer is important because it will lead to a more positive outcome for the patient.
Cancer is caused by cells that multiply abnormally to form a tumor. The untreated cells that grow uncontrolled and affect surrounding tissues are the dangerous ones. These are the tumors that fall into the malignant category. If cancer metastasizes, it can spread to areas all over the body. Tumors live and grow by feeding off the oxygen and nutrients that would normally go to healthy tissues. There are three primary types of skin cancer – basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. There are other types of skin cancer but together they account for less than 1% of all skin cancer.
Carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, comprised of the two types, basal cell and squamous cell. Although they are malignant, they do not pose as great of a threat to the patient because they are not likely to spread to other areas of the body. They are often easily removed through in-office surgery. The sooner they are caught and resolved, the less invasive and scarring the surgery will be for the patient. Melanoma is not as common as carcinoma, but these tumors are far more dangerous. Early detection is ideal, because this type is more likely to be aggressive and spread with life-threatening results.

In many cases, skin cancer may be prevented if diagnosed and treated while still a precancerous lesion. These changes in the skin are recognizable to the dermatologist and may be removed or carefully monitored to avoid negative implications for the patient. Because each patient is unique and recognizing dangerous skin changes can be tricky, only a professional should be trusted for proper testing, diagnosis, and treatment. Guessing whether a new spot or changing mole is harmless or not could lead to life-threatening or even deadly results.
